Cambodia Adoption Program

Program Status

Cambodia is currently closed to US Citizens.  However, FHSA can help families who are not US citizens adopt from Cambodia.

Families must submit a notarize letter from the country of citizenship approving them to adopt a child from Cambodia.

The Country

Cambodia is a small coastal country nestled between Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. It is warm throughout the year.

The Children

In Cambodia boys and girls are available. Because many families tend to request healthy infant girls, the waiting period for a girl may be slightly longer than for a boy.

The majority of adoptions are for very young infants, but there are also many toddlers, older children, sibling groups and children with special medical needs available. Cambodia only allows children over the age of eight years to be adopted if they are part of a sibling group.

Many children who are available in Cambodia are abandoned at the orphanage due to death of one or both of their parents or because of extreme poverty; therefore, little information is known about the child’s family history. At times, birthdates may be estimated.

Parent Eligibility

At least one adoptive parent must be between 25 and 55 years of age. Adoption by single men or women between the ages of 40 and 50 years of age is permitted. Adoptive parents should have no more than two children living in the home. Grown children that do not reside in the home are not counted.

Please see our agency information page for further guidelines.

Referral

The referral process can begin after your dossier has been assembled. FHSA will contact you with verbal information on a referral for you to consider. You will be asked to give a verbal acceptance to proceed, after which, a photo of the child and a medical report will be sent to you.

The medical reports provided by Cambodia are very comprehensive on the child’s health and also include the following screenings required by international regulations: HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B & C.
